The first & most important part of a patio, walkway or driveway construction is the base, as with all major roads all the black dirt must be separated from the clay and then compact gravel is installed to bring the area back up to grade. Any black dirt left under patios & walkways can cause frost to build up in winter creating frost heaves which can lead to uneven patios when the ground thaws.
